Andy Garcia’s 2005 film The Lost City, about the Cuban Revolution, included scenes filmed in Cuba (of course). When it came time to shoot scenes set in a tobacco field, Garcia approached the Fuente family to see if their plantations were available. There was one problem:
All the tobacco had been harvested already!
Tobacco is planted early in the year and harvested in springtime. In order to provide Garcia’s desired backdrop, the Fuentes decided to plant a summer Corojo crop purely for use as a setting in the film. The plants grew, the scenes were filmed (take a look here halfway down the page to see one), and that was that. While The Lost City may not have succeeded as well as Garcia had hoped as a film, the throwaway tobacco surprised everyone in the best way.
It showed all the complexity of the original Fuente Fuente OpusX wrapper leaves, but had a unique character all its own. Spicy, sweet, with notes of almond and caramel, the wrapper delivered outstanding quality despite its “out of season” growth. Maybe it’s time to experiment more with summer tobacco?
Garcia allowed the use of the Lost City logo on the cigar bands, and suggested that certain proceeds be donated to the Fuente’s Cigar Family Charitable Foundation, which provides education and health services to communities in the Dominican Republic.
