The jump from the traditional Robusto cigar to the Double Robusto cigar is not a big one. We’re sorry to disappoint, but it’s not twice the size of a Robusto. Instead, think of it as a “Robusto Plus.” There is a little more length and a little more girth (which makes it a great way to say “Happy Anniversary!” to the missus). While robustos generally measure somewhere around five inches or so, the Double Robusto cigar is closer to 5.5 or 6 inches (or even more in certain cases). The ring gauge of the Double Robusto gets a little bump, too, going from about 50 to a 52 or 54 in some of the most popular versions.
A number of premium cigar makers roll tobacco into the Double Robusto cigar format. Among these are Oliva, Arturo Fuente, God of Fire, Plasencia, and others. The reason for the size is as much a mystery to us as it probably is to you. We’d love to know more about what specifically led manufacturers to create this cigar size, but it probably comes down to smoking preference. If there’s a market for a product, cigar makers will generally create it, even if the market is small. Dedicated and hardcore cigar fans are some of the most reliable and tenacious customers out there. If they love a thing, they’re going to get it no matter what.
The Double Robusto cigar adds some smoking time to your typical Robusto experience. For those that are used to the Robusto's 20-30 minute smoke time, you’ll need to clear a bit more space in your schedule. The Double Robusto, especially those hitting 6.5 inches long, can take closer to the hour mark to fully experience and enjoy. We’re guessing that this is much of the reason the cigar exists – to provide a longer smoke. If you’re a Robusto fan and you’ve been nubbing your cigars out a little faster than you’d like, give the Double Robusto a shot – it may have just what you’re looking for.
