The A.J. Fernandez Last Call Habano Cigar wasn’t always something you could simply buy.
Once upon a time, it was saved for a special purpose. At the main factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, the company offered tours to fans of the brand and people who simply wanted to learn more about the production of cigars. At the end of the tour, if you hung around, you might be treated to a special blend as a thank you. It was also broken out when visitors would come to the Fernandez main estate to watch Sunday or Thursday night NFL games. Somewhere in the fourth quarter, a final cigar would be handed out to guests. But if you know the cigar business, you know that a company can’t keep a good blend to itself for very long. Ultimately, the special smoke had to make its way to the market.
The A.J. Fernandez Last Call cigar features an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, with a Nicaraguan blend inside. Light up the core blend and you’ll get flavors of oak, nuts, earth, and savory leather. It’s also available in a Pennsylvania Broadleaf Maduro wrapper if you prefer something darker. Choose that wrapper and you’ll be treated to dark chocolate, espresso, black pepper, and molasses.
Of course, there’s still the main question to answer: how good is it?
We’ll spare you the suspense: It’s friggin’ amazing!
This little secret blend actually pulled in a 93 rating from Cigar Aficionado when they finally got around to releasing it to the public. Can you believe they kept it a “secret” as long as they did? It’s a crime, but we’re glad they’ve finally made things right.
