You gotta love the brands that outdo themselves. Not content with really fine smokes, they keep tweaking blends and trying to top what they’ve already created. A.J. Fernandez seems to have a knack for it, releasing one cigar that is widely enjoyed, then releasing a variation that’s even better than the original.
Meet the A.J. Fernandez New World Puro Especial, an awesome departure from the original core blend that’s earned a 93 rating and a place in many, many humidors. This is another Nicaraguan puro with a variety of three-to-five-year aged tobaccos from Fernandez farms. There’s the Criollo '98 wrapper (grown on the company’s San José farm), La Soledad farm leaf for flavor, La Providencia tobacco for aroma, and San Diego tobacco to bring some mineral quality to the blend. The flavors are truly luxurious: rich chocolate, leather, coffee, caramel, and a bit of licorice.
The New World cigar line was named in honor of Christopher Columbus’s historic voyages to connect Europe and the Americas. His explorers were some of the first Europeans to ever experience tobacco smoking. When tobacco was brought back to the Old World, the crowd went wild, as they did with so many other new crops (like corn, potatoes, and tomatoes). The cigar industry was nonexistent then, but as we now know, it would ultimately develop into one of the world’s favorite vices.
