Don’t get confused. This isn’t the classic Cuban cigar – this is just a tribute – but it’s a fine one at that! It earned a 92 rating from Cigar Aficionado and made it onto the Top 25 Cigars of the Year list in 2018 at number 25. It’ll have to get a touch better to live up to the line’s Cuban quality, which took home a 96 rating and was the #2 cigar of 2015.
The original Ramon Allones cigar brand was founded in 1837 in Cuba. It’s one of the world’s oldest cigar brands that are still in production. Possibly the coolest fact about this ancient cigar company is that they were the first manufacturer to decorate boxes and cigars with ornate, branded labels. Now, high-quality box art and striking bands are par for the course, but once upon a time, it was simply somebody’s bright idea to try out. Boy, did it ever catch on! We have to wonder what cigars and their boxes looked like before then. Were the boxes just blank? We’ll have to save our curiosity for a blog post in the future. Let’s get back to the smoke at hand.
The A.J. Fernandez Ramon Allones is a Nicaraguan puro, made with a Habano Oscuro wrapper and a blend that includes Corojo '98, Criollo '99, and hybrid tobacco grown on a Fernandez farm in Estelí. The flavors are quite fun and include nuts, cocoa powder, marshmallow, and caramel. The Fernandez family is off to a good start with this smoke. Now, only time will tell if the Nicaraguan version will live up to this cigar’s storied Cuban legacy.
