Boveda (pronounced “BOH-vuh-duh”) offers something that is a step up from the old way of doing things. Once upon a time, you had to really monitor and manage humidity levels yourself. This meant charging humidifiers, dealing with solution refreshes and replenishment, and things like that. And many folks still do it that way. No prob there.
For the lazy/efficient, there are Boveda humidification packs.
Boveda humidification packs make use of simple science to automatically maintain whatever humidity level is on the package. Inside the packet is an osmosis membrane that allows the moisture from a saline mixture inside to travel in and out as needed. When the humidity level in your humidor drops below what you want, the Boveda packet puts out moisture. When it’s too high, the packet takes it in. It’s automatic humidification that really couldn’t be easier.
Boveda packets can eventually dry out from the continuous action and overall loss of moisture from opening and closing your humidor, or from the storage of particularly dry stogies. When that happens, they’re disposable. Toss the old ones and pop in some new ones. It’s essentially the easiest humidification solution out there, thanks to our special friend, chemistry.
You can buy Boveda packs that maintain your choice of humidity level, from 65% to 84% (84% is not recommended unless you know what you’re doing – humidity that high is for seasoning a new and dry humidor, not storing cigars long term unless you like smoking mold). Generally, somewhere around 70% is best, but you can experiment and do a bit of research if you think that won’t be quite right for your situation.
What happens if you don’t humidify your cigars properly? They dry out and can become bitter and disgusting to smoke. They also can burn way too hot and can also crack and crumble. Re-humidifying them is possible in some cases, but the best solution is to simply store them at the proper humidity levels and to take better care of them than you did your feral children.
