J.C. Newman cigar company owns tons of brands around the Americas and the Caribbean (e.g. Black Diamond, Quorum, El Reloj, and The American), but Brick House cigars are focused on one country in particular: Nicaragua. Brick House cigars are made at the J.C. Newman PENSA factory in Estelí, one of the thriving centers of the modern cigar industry.
The brand name is a callback to the old country: Hungary. The Newman family has fond memories of owning the only brick house in their small village. It wasn’t a large home, but it was full of life and friendship – a place for people to gather to eat, drink, smoke, and laugh.
Julius Caeser Newman eventually made his way to America and started his own cigar company in Cleveland, Ohio in 1895. The Brick House brand came along in 1937. The line was retired for decades but was revived in 2009 by Newman’s grandsons, Eric and Bobby. Using mainly Nicaraguan tobacco, these cigars took the industry by storm and captured some 90+ ratings with Cigar Aficionado, even cracking the Top 25 Cigars of the Year list.
Brick House cigars occupy a funny place in the industry. High ratings might have you thinking of premium cigars, but the company’s appearance on Best Bargain Cigar lists might throw you off. We’ll keep it simple: Brick House blends can be both. The company is without a doubt focused on making Brick House cigars one of the best values on the market, but they don’t do it by creating throwaway stogies. Instead, they use quality tobacco and put together respectable blends that occasionally hit that sweet spot where the price is low and the value is high.
If you’re a price-conscious smoker, this is a great cigar brand to test out. Brick House cigars have a ton of history behind them and the J.C. Newman company has had success with a variety of tobaccos and blends.
