When professionals in any field decide they’ve mastered everything and that their way of doing things is the end-all, they stop evolving and fall behind. This is especially true in the arts, including the art of cigar making. The Oliva Cigar Co. practice some of the richest cigar-making traditions around, and for good reason—they work! But that doesn’t mean that new ideas won’t work, and Oliva is wise enough to see this.

When Oliva sales rep Sam Leccia wanted to create the full-strength Cain brand, including Cain Maduro cigars, he stated that palates have changed and matured and that newer generations want a full-bodied cigar that isn’t harsh. Oliva saw the opportunity, and the new brand was born.

Cain Maduro cigars are Nicaraguan puros powered by a blend of ligero from Estelí, Condega, and Jalapa. Ligero is a tobacco plant’s highest priming. Since they are the highest, they receive the most sunlight and become thick and strong, filled with potent nicotine and flavor. The idea is to create a high-powered stick using mostly Ligero and then calm down any potential harshness by triple fermenting the tobacco.

The dark wrapper is Habano Maduro with a bit of oil to it. The aroma coming off the wrapper on the pre-light is tobacco and earth. On the cold draw, we pick up chocolate. We light up one of our Cain Maduro cigars and take a few pulls, and are immediately taken in by dense clouds of smoke that are suddenly everywhere.

Within the smoke, we’re tasting pepper, cocoa, spice, oak, and sweet tobacco. Things continue pretty much the same in the second third, except the nicotine is now having its way with us. During the final third, a nutty flavor and coffee appear, though the pepper, spice, and cocoa run the show for the remainder of the stick.
