The CAO Colombia is another interesting and rare blend from the CAO “World” line of cigars, meant to showcase tobaccos from a variety of growing regions around the world. This one sports an impressive 92 rating and looks at cigar making in a bit of a different way. So many cigar makers feel compelled to focus on the wrapper (and with good reason – it’s responsible for 99% of the look and feel of the cigar)! CAO gave Rick Rodriguez, Chief Blender, a special challenge with the CAO Colombia, however: highlight a special filler leaf, and let the rest of the cigar be the background.
Why not?
So, this cigar has a fine Honduran Jamastran wrapper, a rich Cameroon binder, and some decent Brazilian filler. But who cares about that stuff, this one is all about that 70% Colombian filler leaf! Here’s the story: it’s a Cuban-seed tobacco that’s been grown in Colombia for hundreds of years, called “Ica Mazinga.” It’s grown in an isolated mountainous region of Colombia, where the soil is full of the minerals needed to provide it with its unique character. The resulting flavors of earth, wood, black cherry, nougat, and cashew are a cigar blend you won’t find anywhere else any time soon. This is a unique smoke that would be a welcome puff for anyone in search of something a little different.
