One significant difference between CAO Session and the majority of CAO cigars is where they're made. Rather than Central America, the Session is the first CAO cigar produced in the Dominican Republic in over a decade. This cigar is the result of a collaboration between Yuri Guillen, who manages one of the world's largest cigar factories— General Cigar Dominicana—and brand CAO blender and brand ambassador Rick Rodriguez.

According to Rodriguez, the best times he can remember have taken place over cigars in his garage. For the medium strength CAO Session cigar, he wanted to offer an approachable stick that anyone could enjoy during a smoking session.

CAO Session cigars start with a core blend of Dominican and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos. A Dominican Vega Especial binder holds this blend snug, and a dark as pitch Connecticut broadleaf Maduro sits on top. Blenders far and wide use this dark leaf with great enthusiasm, and for good reason—smokers keep this flavorful wrapper in high demand. Though there was a time when Connecticut broadleaf was primarily used as a binder and filler.

The dark, oiled-up, sweet, and flavorful Connecticut broadleaf grows in the Connecticut River Valley, where tobacco plants get a ton of sunlight. Come harvest time, these leaves are stalk cut. This cut happens at the base of the plant, harvesting its entirety.

Next, they are hang dried to continue enriching the plant. Of course, we can’t forget the fermentation process. It has to be perfect. Too much fermentation will dry the leaves out, draining them of their oils and flavor. Too little fermentation makes the leaves sour and unpleasant.

Lucky for us, CAO Session cigars are fermented to perfection. Add fire to this stogie, and you’ll find red pepper spice, vanilla, raisins, and light chocolate notes.
