Anyone who knows Cohiba thinks of it as a brand synonymous with exclusivity and luxury, but this line from the Dominican-based Cohiba operation (owned by General Cigar Co.) is meant for all to enjoy. Forget the rare, unobtainable sticks only found in solid gold humidors – the Cohiba Blue is a premium cigar for everybody.
For anyone that might be confused, there are two Cohiba companies out there in the world. There’s one in Cuba and one in the Dominican Republic. They’re separate operations. For those in the U.S., because of the federal embargo, we are unable to sell Cuban cigars from our home in sunny Florida to our countrymen and women around the nation. So the Cohibas you get here are made in the Dominican Republic by General Cigar Co., who also makes Avo, Hoya de Monterrey, La Gloria Cubana, Macanudo, Partagas, and Punch.
Suffice to say: they know what the heck they’re doing when it comes to tobacco.
The Cohiba Blue features a Honduran Habano wrapper and binder, along with a filler blend of Dominican, Honduran, and Nicaraguan tobacco. The first light up gives you draws of smoke with a bit of white pepper and a rich aroma of baked goods. This develops into cream and leather, with an evolving cinnamon note as you go along. It’s an interesting flavor journey and more than enough to keep our attention from one puff to the next.
