There are two Cohiba brands in the world. One is based in Cuba, and is run by Habanos, S.A., the Cuban state-owned cigar company. The other is based in the Dominican Republic, and is run by General Cigar Company (who also puts out Avo, Punch, Partagas, and lots more).
The Cohiba Puro Dominicana cigar is created by the Dominican company, not the Cuban one. They make other stuff. We know, you’re totally shocked.
Those who know about cigars probably understand by now that the soil in the DR can be used to grow some exquisite tobacco. Look no further than the cult hit Opus X, from Arturo Fuente, if you need proof (or Davidoff Aniversario, Ashton Estate Sun Grown, or La Flor Dominicana if you need more proof). The leaves there soak up the sun, combine it with dark, fertile soil, and grow up into leaves with fabulous flavors. The products from La Republica Dominicana are even a bit underrated sometimes, if you ask us.
Outside the cigar, the Cohiba Puro Dominicana features an oily Dominican Habano wrapper. The filler blend within is all Dominican tobacco (that’s what puro means, after all – tobacco from only one country used in the cigar). These leaves are aged “en tercio,” this time using charcoaled wooden barrels as a third maturing step that bring an earthy, toasty flavor to the blend. The smoke is medium-bodied, and also brings in leather and spice to the mix. Fans of Dominican smokes will find a lot to enjoy about this cigar from a company that’s been working with Dominican tobacco for decades.
