Every brand has to have their Cadillac smoke, and the Dominican Republic-based Cohiba company has the Spectre cigar – a treasure trove of hand-picked tobaccos that are blended for an outstandingly complex and delicious flavor profile.
For those who are confused, there are two Cohiba companies in the world. One is based in Cuba and is run by Habanos, S.A., Cuba’s state-owned cigar company. The other is a high quality cigar company based in the Dominican Republic, and which is owned by General Cigar Company, the operation that also makes Avo, Punch, Partagas, La Gloria Cubana, and many other cigars. The Cohiba Spectre is a premium product of the Dominican company, to be clear.
Outside, the cigar is wrapped in an Ecuadoran Sumatra leaf culled from high primings – that is, leaves that grow on the upper section of the tobacco plant. Moving inside, you’ll see a Connecticut Broadleaf binder. Nice and flavorful. Then things get absolutely baller. The filler blend is a true banquet of tobaccos. Imagine a butler with a silver tray, carefully going down a row of all the tobaccos in the world. As he plucks up each leaf in his white glove, he sniffs it, approves, and lays it on the tray. His choices:
• 1995 harvest Dominican Piloto Cubano aged en tercio, • Nicaraguan tobacco grown in Estelí (crop years 2011 and 2014) and aged in Spanish Sherry barrels, and • Honduran leaves from San Agustín (2002), Jamastran (2011), and La Entrada (2011).
Whoa.
This absolutely impressive collection of tobaccos brings delicious complexity. The flavors of mocha and earthy nuts develop in the second third into vanilla and cocoa battling on the tongue. The final third is a dessert of cedar and cinnamon, and the cigar bids you a fond adieu as you wonder what the hell you just smoked. Only two guys make these extraordinarily rare cigars: roller Xirolma Céspedes and buncher Ruben Dario Perez. Guys: well done! If you need us, we’ll be cutting the head off of one of these smokes and settling in for a satisfying and fascinating experience.
