Corojo is the leaf that old school smokers keep coming back to time and time again. It wrapped so many classic Cuban cigars that even decades later people are still nostalgic for that traditional flavor. And newer smokers who light it up keep finding the special flavor that made corojo tobacco king for so long.
To be clear, the Drew Estate La Vieja Habana Cuban Corojo is not a “Cuban” cigar. The wrapper leaf uses Cuban seed tobacco, also known as “habano.” These seeds are grown in Nicaragua, along with the filler mix, which comes from farms in both Estelí and the Jalapa Valley. In reality, this is a Nicaraguan puro. And if the recent Cigar Aficionado Top 25 Cigars of the Year lists are any indication, Nicaraguan puros are the most popular blend around.
The inside of the Drew Estate La Vieja Habana Cuban Corojo cigar is referred to as “tripa mezclado,” or mixed filler. This means that both whole leaf long filler and chopped short filler were both used. As the company explains, the short filler is high quality trimmings from other cigars that are rolled at La Gran Fabrica, the factory where DE cigars are made.
As cigar rollers sit at their crafting stations and create masterpieces all day long, they sometimes have to trim tobacco leaf to make things roll together perfectly. It would be a shame to waste this good tobacco, and so it’s used in the La Vieja Habana line. This is the kind of sustainable green initiative we can really get behind!
La Vieja Habana was actually Drew Estate’s first brand, before the phrase “Drew Estate” was ever uttered. In the mid 90s, Jonathan Drew was just a guy with a cigar kiosk in the old World Trade Center, and LVH cigars were his way of trying to maintain stock levels when cigars were hard to come by. Little did he know that almost 30 years later, he’d be on top of the cigar game and STILL be selling these “old Havana” smokes. What a trip!
The La Vieja Habana corojo cigar is medium bodied with decent earthy, spicy flavor. It’s not super complex, but delivers just enough enjoyment to keep you interested. For a lot of people, the price and quality make this blend perfect for their regular morning smoke. The premium wrapper really brings everything together, making this a reliable, traditional stogie to light up any day of the week.

The punch cutter is best for the entire La Vieja Habana line of cigars. Due to the mixed filler, a guillotine cutter may lead to too much tobacco shedding.
