Now, you may not be familiar with the Pappy Van Winkle line of whiskeys and bourbons, but right off the bat, you know that a company can't succeed with a name like that unless the product is good. And it is! But that's not what we're selling here today. Drew Estate, true to form, created this line of cigars in an effort to make a smoke that would pair well with whiskey and similar drinks. Suffice to say, they succeeded. The folks at the Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery (where Pappy and Co. make their liquor), would be proud.
Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve Churchill's are made using Kentucky-grown fire cured tobacco. Instead of a more traditional air curing process (where tobacco is hung in a barn while it dries out), this tobacco is cured and fermented in a barrel. Sound like any other products you're familiar with? Of course! To make the magic happen, fire cured tobacco sits in a barrel that is placed over low flames while the leaves dry out. Often, this process is favored for pipe or chewing tobacco. The result is a flavor that is distinctly smoky, and often evokes campfire memories.
The flavor of Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve has been referred to as carrying a bourbon sweetness, but also brings in fired wood, and caramel. Pair this one with Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye for a delicious experience that'll take you back a generation or two.
