As the #2 cigar of 2014, E.P. Carrillo’s La Historia cigar is as close as you can get to a Cigar of the Year without winning. With a 95 rating, we’re sure that if you manage to get a hold of some, you’ll find it to be among the best in your humidor.
It starts with a rich brown Mexican San Andrés Maduro wrapper. Inside that is a carefully-chosen Ecuadorian Sumatra binder, and then a blend of Dominican and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos. The resulting smoke is lush and full-bodied, with a fantastic combination that includes espresso, dark chocolate, roasted nuts, and black pepper, all in perfect balance. It’s the wealth of flavor, but also the artful inclusion of just the right amount of each leaf type that make La Historia cigars so special. It takes the lessons learned over multiple generations to create a cigar like this, which is fitting given that this cigar line is a tribute to those who enabled E.P. Carrillo brand owner Ernesto Perez-Carrillo Jr. to succeed.
It started many years ago in Cuba, with his father, Ernesto Sr. He was a Cuban Senator and owner of the El Credito cigar factory. Like many Cubans, however, he relocated the family from Cuba to Miami due to Castro’s revolution. This happened when Ernesto Jr. was just 6.
Though he worked closely with his father at times, Ernesto Jr. preferred another type of smoke to that of cigars – he liked the fog of the late night jazz lounge. His career as a jazz drummer didn’t go as planned, though, and he ultimately returned to work with his father. He took over the cigar company at 29 after his father passed, and struggled through tough times, relying on some of his father’s core values to see him through. His father had taught him about dedication to work, humility, patience, and respect – these values were steady guides and brought him and his company to the world-class operation it is today.
Ernesto Jr. has enjoyed tremendous success, thanks to the lessons of those who came before. This wonderful cigar is his tribute, and one that we think is quite possibly his best ever.
