One could say that the research and development work for Gran Habano has been in the works for around a century. It began in the 1920s with George Rico’s great grandfather growing dark tobacco in Columbia. When George’s grandfather took over, his father Guillermo would tag along with his father in the tobacco fields. As a young boy, Guillermo would cut tobacco leaves. When he was old enough, they brought him on as a grower. During this time, it was George’s mother who owned and operated a small cigar factory.

George didn’t plan to stay in the cigar business. He ended up in the United States, where he started his own business making kitchen cabinets. But as fate would have it, George was asked to manufacture cigar boxes, and in no time, his cigar passion burned once again. Along the way, George has served as a tobacco grower, tobacco leaf broker, and ultimately the founder and owner of Gran Habano Cigars.

In 1998 the Ricos established a cigar factory in Danlí, Honduras. While they geared up to launch Gran Habano, they produced cigars for other brands. Fast forward a handful of years to 2003, and Gran Habano rolled out its three core lines. Among these was the Gran Habano No. 5 Corojo. This cigar was such a hit that Guillermo and George Rico stockpiled a supply of the rare Corojo wrapper used. As a result, the wrappers aged for an additional eight years before finding their way onto Gran Habano Vintage 2002 cigars.
