If you drive up to a certain AGANORSA tobacco farm in Nicaragua late at night, you’ll probably get barked at. Those fields are watched over by at least two Guardians of the Farm: American Bulldogs named JJ and Campeon. They’re the canine companions (and employees) of Kyle Gellis and Max Fernández, the blenders who created the original Guardian of the Farm cigar that earned a 93-point rating from Cigar Aficionado and was named the #8 cigar of 2017.
The Guardian of the Farm Nightwatch cigar represents a step forward, using a new Maduro wrapper that brings a delicious set of flavors to an already enjoyable blend.
For those who don’t know, Kyle Gellis is the youngish founder of Warped, and Max Fernández is the son of Eduardo Fernández, who runs the TABSA cigar factory where some Warped blends are rolled up. The two have collaborated not just on the first Guardian of the Farm release, but also the Warped Futuro cigar.
So far, so good for the next wave of cigar blending talent.
This time around, the focus of the Guardian of the Farm Nightwatch cigar is a Nicaraguan shade-grown Jalapa Maduro leaf. This Maduro wrapper is rolled around a Jalapa Corojo binder and a long-filler blend of Corojo and Criollo tobaccos from Estelí and Jalapa. The flavor profile is a rich array of quality Maduro notes. There’s pepper and earth up front, with touches of blackberry and a welcoming note of chocolate baked goods (like, say, a chocolate chocolate chunk cookie). It’s just what you’re looking for when you see a smoke like this. This one won’t disappoint.
As for the pups? Fernandéz says that, “Every dog, whether it is one of ours or your own, is commemorated with this cigar.” So if you’ve got a dog, this one’s for your furry buddy (even if he or she would rather sit somewhere else when you’re smoking).
