Just when we thought the Cellar Reserve line had peaked in terms of how rare the tobacco would get, Gurkha comes along with the Cellar Reserve 21 Year cigar, featuring Dominican leaf that’s been maturing so long that if it walked into a bar they’d have to serve it.
When we last saw this line, Gurkha had just released the Cellar Reserve Platinum, with a Nicaraguan blend featuring 12-year-aged tobacco. Quite a treat, but still not older than the 18-year-aged Corojo wrapper on the Cellar Reserve Edicion Especial, or the 15-year Dominican leaf found in the first of this new Cellar Reserve series. (The original Cellar Reserve issued in the early days of Gurkha, of course, didn’t feature tobacco like this. Those were different times and the company was just getting a foothold in brick and mortar retailers.)
So, what’s going on with the Cellar Reserve 21 Year cigar? Well, the outer leaf is a classic Connecticut Shade. In interior blend uses a Nicaraguan binder and long-fillers, along with a dash of the aforementioned 21-year-aged Dominican tobacco. It’s not enough for it to dominate the blend, but instead is treated more as the icing on the cake.
Light up one of these perfectos and you’ll be treated to salty and toasty flavors, along with orange zest, cashew, and the Connecticut wrapper’s signature coffee note. It’s a nice blend that gives you a smooth and tasty smoking experience.
We’d say that this has to be the end of the crazy aged tobaccos for Gurkha, but that would just be foolish. For the company that produces the $1,000 cigar, what could possibly be to rare and elusive. We’ll see you folks soon for something that will probably be called the Cellar Reserve Parchomento, and will possibly feature 25-year-aged tobacco that nearly crumbled to dust in the hands of the rollers tasked with turning it into cigars.
That’s our best guess.
