H. Upmann The Banker cigars go all the way back to the beginning for this brand, to 1844. Carl and Herman Upmann were fresh off the boat from Germany and got right to work building their businesses in Cuba. This included Herman’s purchase of a cigar factory. The business had pretty good synergy with their import/export and financial ventures. They could gift cigars to business partners and prospects, and also make connections in the tobacco industry who needed financing.

The Pearl of the Antilles was good to the Upmanns, at least financially. The weather was too much for Herman, though, and he eventually went home to Germany, leaving the company in the hands of his nephew.

One of their successes was a premium cigar blend that they were known for. This one was kept in the vault and dispensed to “their most important clients.” Given that this was 170 years ago, that exact blend is lost to time. The lineage, however, is preserved in H.
