Illusione really does things differently, and it all comes from a focus on finding small crops of tobacco that can truly carry a premium blend. Sometimes, this effort results in a fairly reliable cigar line with more or less repeatable characteristics that we can count on. At other times, when the chosen leaf supply and quality will vary more year to year, things get a bit more flexible, and you wind up with a cigar like the Illusione Singulare.
Singulare was named because each bach is a bit of a limited edition blend on each release. In essence, each cigar run is “singular.” Like we were saying, the limited runs are due to the small batches coming out of the grower’s fields. Everything comes from a certain farm and yield. Once the crop has been harvested, Illusione founder Dion Giolito heads on down to test out the tobacco to find a lot and priming worthy of rolling. His incredible ability to locate the right quality and flavor profile has been proven time and time again, and this is one of the big moments where the magic happens for the brand. After the blend is designed and produced, the end result is that about 500-1,500 boxes make it to market carrying an Illusione Singulare band.
Typically, the cigar features a “AAA Grade” Corojo Cafe Rosado wrapper, rolled around ablend of Nicaraguan Criollo '98 and Corojo '99 long-fillers. As described above, the leaves selected are mainly from the lower primings - that is, tobacco found lower on the stalk of the actual tobacco plant. The flavor is generally quite nice, and displays a classic quality Nicaraguan profile featuring ground pepper, dark roasted coffee bean (and maybe a hint of cinnamon if you really dig into the spice notes). There’s also nutty aromas and the occasional fruit flavor on the finish, depending on the vintage.
It’s not always the same thing year to year, but with Illusione, you know that you’re getting a fine cigar. You really can’t go wrong here.
