The Jake Wyatt Herbert Spencer cigar is named after a man few know – but all have heard a phrase he coined: “survival of the fittest.”
We don’t know what inspired the JW team to choose that for the name of this blend, but we know that in the cigar world, as in the natural world, only the strong survive. Competition in our industry continues to rage on, growing by the day. Thankfully, the cigar market is still growing, too. Kicking back on the weekend with a whiskey and a cigar has become far more common than it was in years past, and we’re loving every minute of it. And while scores of new cigar smokers discover just how enjoyable it is to toast up a stogie during downtime, the marketplace keeps making room for new brands like Jake Wyatt.
One of the founders of Jake Wyatt was a pro baseball player, so he knows all about battling through competition to get a dub. Maybe that’s a part of how this cigar got its name? We’re only guessing…
The Jake Wyatt Herbert Spencer cigar is blended to bring loads of flavor. Any stogie sporting an aged San Andrés Maduro wrapper like this is going to bring spice and lip-smacking mature tobacco notes. Once the blending team added in a bit of Pennsylvania broadleaf to the filler, however, things went to a whole new level. That foundational Dominican blend that packs each of the blends of the JW “Gourmet Collection” is really getting all the help it needs in a cigar like this.
Toast it up and you’re in for a delicious ride. You’ll get notes of earthy flavors like semi-sweet chocolate, black pepper, and cedar that “linger sweetly on the palate,” in the company’s own words. They also recommend that you not ignore the retrohale of the Jake Wyatt Herbert Spencer cigar. It really brings out a well-developed earthiness that is going to make the whole experience that much more enjoyable.
Jake Wyatt is a relatively new company launched in 2020 by Neil Garcia and Gerard Abajian, two longtime friends who had been cigar buddies for ages. Gerard’s family owns Mardo's cigar shop, and so there’s a wealth of tobacco experience to draw on to create interesting and tasty bold blends like this.

A simple red wine would be a good pairing. Nothing too fancy. Pop a bottle of Sur de los Andes Malbec Cabernet Sauvignon blend and enjoy with a companion.
