You might be wondering what the hell an “Air Bender” is. Well, there is a super-popular animated series called Avatar: The Last Airbender, but Litto Gomez, owner of La Flor Dominicana, says that’s not where the name of this smoke comes from. Instead, he says that air bending is simply what smokers do. We draw, we puff, and we bend the air.
Sure thing, pal.
It’s a pity he isn’t explicitly making an anime-inspired smoke here. The cigar/anime crossover market is largely untapped. The first to do it may find their bank accounts going “Super Saiyan.” (if you don’t know, don’t ask. Let’s focus on the cigar here).
This is no casual stick - this is a bona-fide world class smoke. The La Flor Dominicana Air Bender cigar was chosen as Cigar Aficionado’s 10th best cigar of 2010, with a score of 94. Its flavors of red pepper and coffee, along with the whiskey finish, won judges over. There’s also that nifty chisel shape, which was invented by Gomez in 2003. As the story goes, he was chomping away on a cigar while on a drive and the resulting narrowed, squarish end shape of his cigar stuck in his mind. He challenged his team to work with it and lo and behold – a new cigar shape was born: the chisel.
A filler blend of Dominican piloto Cubano, Sumatra seed, and Corojo tobacco is wrapped in a fine Habano-seed wrapper leaf grown in Ecuador, and the end product is immaculate. What a fine smoke!
