La Palina’s modern offerings have been more focused on Honduran tobacco. The La Palina Nicaragua Oscuro is the company’s first foray into serious Nicaraguan blends. They’ve picked an excellent partner in A.J. Fernandez, a well-regarded Nicaraguan grower and cigar maker who produces blends for Rocky Patel and also offers the popular San Lotano and New World cigars, as well as the Ramon Allones, which landed on Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 list in 2018. The connection comes from Sam Philips, a co-president of La Palina who used to be a VP at AJF.
Go with what you know, right?
Thus, from the A.J. Fernandez Cigars de Nicaragua factory, located in Estelí, comes the La Palina Nicaragua. The cigar features either a handsome brown Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper or a dark Nicaraguan Oscuro around a rich Nicaraguan binder and filler blend. The Connecticut wrapper, with its relatively mild flavors, gives the interior blend some space to shine. Light it up and you’ll get smoke with earth, pepper, and roasted nuts The Oscuro-wrapped version, on the other hand, gives off flavors of leather, dark chocolate, and oak. It’s an excellent way to showcase Nicaraguan tobacco and a heck of a first effort from La Palina on the blend.
