Depending on what kind of smoker you are, mild cigars may be the best, most relaxing mellow smoke available. Now, for some, it takes a full-strength cigar brand to really let you sail away and truly unwind. You may have a high tolerance or you may just be a tough SOB and cigars with a small amount of nicotine don’t do anything to you.
But for others, a mild cigar is just right.
Mild strength cigars are classified in reviews according to their nicotine potency. It’s easy to see how people confuse cigar strength with body, especially because both strength and body of cigars are rated on a mild/light, medium, or full scale. The industry has done newbies no favors here. But for those that are paying attention, body refers to the mouthfeel of a cigar. A full-bodied cigar feels like a meal in your mouth – a very substantial smoke – while a light body cigar has smoke that comes and goes and you can hardly tell it was there.
Let’s get back to cigar strength, though.
Cigar strength is a measure of how potent the impact of the tobacco is on your body. Ligero leaves harvested from the top of the tobacco plant take in the most sun and ultimately display the highest nicotine content and thus strength. Leaves that were taken from the middle (seco/viso) or bottom (volado) have different qualities and less strength. As you might be able to guess, mild-strength cigars don’t usually contain a ton of the best Ligero, while cigars selling themselves as the “Fat Boy Hot Rod XXL” probably will.
More typically, mild cigar brands are made with a nice mellow Connecticut wrapper. This can be tobacco grown in Connecticut or Connecticut-seed tobacco grown in Ecuador (or somewhere else). These cigars often have a gentle coffee or cedar flavor noticed in reviews, although other flavors can certainly enter into the mix. Mild cigars are generally selling as the entry point for those new to smoking. The experience isn’t overly intense. Instead, there’s an opportunity to simply enjoy the flavor of the cigar and puff along.
A mild cigar brand also won’t overwhelm your pairing. If you want to really taste a quality coffee or espresso, mild cigars are a good choice. Or, if you’re having a beer or your best whiskey, mild-strength cigars are mellow and can share the spotlight, allowing some space for other flavors to perk up and make themselves known.
