Before My Father cigars was called “My Father” cigars, it had a different name. In fact, Don Pepin Garcia, founder of the company, didn’t even originally become famous for this brand of cigars. Instead, it was his Tatuaje blends in the early two thousands that really made him a household name in the cigar world. Eventually, he would earn Cigar Aficionado’s highest honor twice with Cigar of the Year awards for La Flor de las Antillas and My Father Le Bijou 1922.
This smoke traces its roots back before all that, however.
This was one of the first cigars that Don Pepin had begun to tinker with back when he was first launching his own brand. For that reason, you can find these sometimes referred to as, “Don Pepin Garcia Original” cigars. Of course, like most things Don Pepin touches, this one turned to gold, pulling in a 93 rating and the number 8 spot on the Cigar Aficionado Top 25 list in 2008. The judges loved it in the Lancero size and enjoyed the sweetness and rich flavors.
The more modern incarnation is a Nicaraguan puro made with a Nicaraguan Corojo wrapper and a Nicaraguan filler blend. Flavors of sweet coffee, chocolate, leather, and spice all combine to produce a smoke that is entirely worthy of Don Pepin’s now legendary name.
