This is one of the original blends that Don Pepin Garcia first tested the waters with at the very beginning. Before he was a two-time Cigar of the Year winner (in 2012 for La Flor de las Antillas and in 2015 for My Father Le Bijou 1922), before he was a legend outside of Cuba, and before My Father cigars even existed, there was this blend. It was rolled up in 2003 at the El Rey de los Habanos factory in Miami’s Little Havana.
Don Pepin moved on to much bigger and better things over the years, but continued to produce Vegas Cubanas in small quantities all along the way to serve fans of the blend. Eventually, he decided to give the cigar its due and turn it into a core offering in proper quantities.
My Father Vegas Cubanas features a corojo leaf wrapper and filler tobaccos from Garcia plantations in Estelí and Jalapa. It pulled in an outstanding 93 rating from Cigar Aficionado, offering the well-known My Father flavor of chocolate-covered raisins, finishing with salty, nutty tastes that will have you smacking your lips. In any other company, this might be a crowning achievement and enough to keep a brand in the premium cigar conversation for years to come. For My Father cigars, it’s an expectation, which is just scary. But when you set the bar as high as Don Pepin has, you get the kind of interesting “problems” that people pray for.
