For years, Oliva has offered rich, dark, flavorful blends. This takes things in a different direction. The Oliva Connecticut reserve features an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper and a Nicaraguan interior blend with no ligero (the strong leaf from the top of the tobacco plant that absorbs the most sunlight and contains the most nicotine). As a result, fans who love Oliva’s signature Series V, the Cigar of the Year winner in 2014, will notice that this is not the same smoke. While the Series V Melanio or Maduro are both rich and dark, the Connecticut Reserve tastes more like light coffee with maple cream, plus a distinct woody note.
Obviously, the company is famous for a variety of other cigars. If you’re here, you’re probably looking for something a little lighter from the master blenders at Oliva. In our opinion, this is a nice reliable every day or morning smoke. We aren’t typically kicking back with this one when we need a heavy experience, but when we’re having that first cup of coffee, we’re happy to reach for the Oliva Connecticut Reserve and light up. It also might be a nice introduction to the brand for a newer smoker. All those descriptions of Oliva’s flagship smokes can be a bit intimidating, but this is a welcoming cigar made with friendly tobaccos.
