The first time the Padrón family won Cigar Aficionado’s Cigar of the Year, it was a tremendous honor.
The second time, it was a jaw-dropping repeat.
The third time, however, it was clear that the Padrón company was on another level, but not in the way we all thought. Attaining perfection in a cigar is nearly impossible – attaining consistency in perfection is just transcendent.
This cigar, the Padrón Family Reserve, was the third winner. The 1926 Anniversary snagged the other two.
Originally, this was a cigar for “family events.” Much like Drew Estate’s Liga Privada, this cigar was created for consumption by circles of family and friends, but was so damn fine that public clamoring eventually reached hysterical levels. The Padrón family eventually decided to release this cigar as a production line of its own. Naturally, production is sharply limited, as with other exquisite Padrón offerings, as this keeps quality sky-high.
The numbers in the name of each vitola relate to years commemorating various events. For example, the Padrón Family Reserve No. 44 is to mark 44 years in business, while No. 45 is for 45 years in business. There’s also a 46, a 50, and what the heck, an 85 to celebrate the 85th birthday of Jose Padrón, who passed in December of 2017 at the age of 91.
Knowing the Padrón family, we have to wonder if we’ll see something like a Family Reserve No. 100. Time will tell.
This box-pressed torpedo features finely-aged tobacco, with some leaves that have matured for up to ten years. The flavors are every bit as strong and intense as we’ve come to expect from Casa Padrón’s finest – malty chocolate, coffee, and toasted nuts.
