So many companies would have stopped at simply aging the tobacco for years, and the blend would have been great there. But when you add in a wrapper leaf that’s spent ten months infusing with the flavors of a bourbon barrel, you get something truly special.

Building the Perdomo Habano Bourbon Barrel-Aged Sun Grown cigar starts on the Perdomo farms around Nicaragua in a number of locations. Everything in here is grown from Cuban seeds, for starters. There are Seco leaves harvested from Condega, Viso coming from Jalapa, and Ligero grown in the heart of one of the world’s premier tobacco cultivation areas: Estelí. Four to six years of aging (depending on which leaf you choose) then bring these leaves to the height of mature flavor.

This version of the blend then takes a Sun Grown wrapper. For those who like lighter profiles, there is a Connecticut version, and for earthiness, there’s also a Maduro. This one, however, is built to produce spicy and sweet complexity, which it does splendidly. It also finishes with oak and almond, offering an array of flavor notes that will keep you puffing along from beginning to end.

One thing to note is the liquor influence on the Perdomo Habano Bourbon Barrel-Aged Sun Grown cigar. Some folks might see “bourbon barrel” and get ready for one of those chocolate bottles filled with a swig of the good stuff. It’s not quite that strong, though. Instead, it’s a subtle influence that joins in the flavor profile and makes it more interesting. The aroma from the unlit cigar definitely will give you a whiff of smoky bourbon, but once you get it lit, the profile is controlled by tobacco.

It’s the cherry on top, not the cake.

That said, this is a highly enjoyable blend and a rare type of cigar that you can’t just get anywhere.
