The Rocky Patel 20th Anniversary blend was completed and tasted great. No doubt, it was ready to hit the market and represent the company as it celebrated an important milestone. Of course, the natural version begged to have a Maduro counterpart. So many modern blends are issued in a variety of wrapper choices to suit different tastes.

But when the blending team handed Rocky the Rocky Patel 20th Anniversary Maduro, he knew it just wasn’t ready. As he explained, “The flavor was there, but it needed more age to really achieve greatness. And we’ve done it before, keeping cigars in our aging room for another year or two until they’re perfect.”

So into the aging room, it went, to await its date with destiny (if it could ever get there). About 18 months later, it was tested and found to be ready. The company released it from “time out” to go delight the world.

The Rocky Patel 20th Anniversary Maduro cigar uses the same Honduran and Nicaraguan interior blend that made the natural version so delicious. On top of that is a Honduran Maduro wrapper from the Jamastran Valley to finish things off. The flavor winds up being fairly tame. This isn’t meant to be a bold and spicy knock-you-on-your-ass stick. Instead, it’s a subtle flavor profile that showcases a refined and understated approach to Honduran tobacco, for a chance. Cigar Snob gave it 91 points, and we think it provides a nice counterpoint to the average Honduran blending style.

Rocky Patel’s anniversary blends have been spectacular so far, charting on Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 Cigars of the Year list more than once. The Decade is a classic, but the 15th Anniversary and 20th Anniversary natural have both earned strong reputations. Now we’ve got this box-pressed beauty to add to the family.
