So RoMa Craft had their work cut out for them when they started concocted a sequel for their runaway hit debut cigar, the CroMagnon. The beefy maduro had earned the new brand a huge cult following that was now clamoring for more. So after a year of scheming, founders Michael Rosales and Skip Martin released the RoMa Craft CroMagnon Aquitaine cigar.
According to smokers everywhere, the Aquitaine is the very best kind of sequel. The kind that celebrates everything that made the original great while reinventing the series. And it's now got its own line, with special limited releases and regular expansions.
What makes the RoMa Craft CroMagnon Aquitaine such a fitting sequel to the original caveman-themed stick?
Well, its insides stick to the CroMagnon formula: aromatic Cameroon tobacco binder and trio of Nicaraguan long-fillers including ultra-rare and smoky tobacco from Puerto Nuevo. But the broadleaf maduro wrapper is gone. In its place? An Ecuadorian habano ligero wrapper. That's right: the CroMagnon Aquitaine is wrapped in one of the spiciest tobacco leaves known to man.
Unlike the original CroMagnon, which begins with an assault of pepper before mellowing out to an earthy chocolate palate, the RoMa Craft CroMagnon Aquitaine cigar starts out deceptively smooth. Sweet honey, black cherry, and fresh cedar lull you into a false sense of security as spicy red pepper builds slowly in the background. You keep puffing away blissfully unaware of the flavor bomb just waiting to explode.
Then, about an inch in, the RoMa Craft Aquitaine cigar goes off with a bang: hickory and mesquite smoke from the Puerto Nuevo fillers, feisty black and red pepper and pungent hay from the wrapper, and rich earthy chocolate. The cherry sticks around but gets dialed way up. The CroMagnon Aquitaine is like a roller coaster, the slow leisurely ascent and sudden, uncontrollable plunge. The strength builds and builds as the ligero wrapper and unique ligero long-fillers play off each other and your taste buds beg for the sweet release of death. Okay, actually the RoMa Craft Aquitaine tastes pretty darn good, but if you can't hold your full-bodied blends than you're in for a rough ride.
Like the OG CroMagnon, the CroMagnon Aquitaine performs best after it's sat in your humidor for a month or two to let the flavors balance out. But the wait is definitely worth it. In fact, this is the kind of intense and complex stick that's worth buying a box of and trying at different ages to see how the tobacco develops over time.
