For cigar companies that have been around as long as Romeo y Julieta, you have to wonder what’s left for them to prove. Of course, unlike the Padrons and Fuentes of the world, RyJ has yet to top the charts with a best of the year smoke (although the #3 ranking earned by the Romeo by Romeo y Julieta nearly pulled it off in 2012), but successfully selling cigars for over a century is arguably a much bigger accomplishment than impressing a slate of modern tastemakers.
That said, Romeo y Julieta isn’t giving up or going on cruise control – far from it – they’re continuing to produce innovative blends and quality cigars that expand the company’s portfolio of offerings to satisfy smokers of all kinds. In fact, the company tagline these days is, “a cigar for every smoker.”
So, who is the Romeo y Julieta Vintage for?
Well, if the mild and flavorful profile is anything to go by, this one’s for smokers who really enjoy a classic smooth Connecticut that just begs to be paired with a nice hot cup of coffee or a cappuccino. The Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper is a work of art – clean, seamless, and without flaw. It makes a great first impression, right out of the box.
Then there’s that faint aroma of cedar wafting up to your nose. You just know it’s going to be a good smoke, even though you’d like to sit there just taking in the smells off the wrapper. (Now that we think of it, how come nobody wears their favorite wrapper leaf like a makeshift moustache so they can smell it all day? Okay, we’re getting off topic. Back to the tobacco.)
Inside is a Mexican binder, along with complex Dominican Olor filler. Light it up and you’ll get a nice cedary smoke with the detectable flavor of sweet creamy cocoa, plus a nice light pepper note. It’s a pretty classic smoke in terms of the core notes, although the actual blend brings a bit of modern intrigue into the mix. Not a bad combo, if you ask us.
