Room 101 Eastern Standard Golden Egg cigars are almost a prank. The secret ingredient could be giggles. The tobacco-fueled minds behind these things are merry travelers going around Latin America, heading wherever inspiration takes them. They puff smoke clouds as they go and have generally found more than a few drinks along the way.
Cigars don’t have to be so serious, you know?
This cigar is another collaboration between Matt Booth, founder of Room 101, and Robert Caldwell’s “Caldwell” cigar company. The two have worked together in the past on the Hit and Run cigar. This time, we’re getting a new take on a popular cigar in the Caldwell portfolio.
The foundational blend of the Room 101 Eastern Standard Golden Egg cigar is the original 92-point Eastern Standard. Cigar Aficionado praised it for its rich flavors of chocolate, rye bread, and nuts. The blend was a significant force in helping build the reputation of Caldwell for a quality smoke. Fans may remember that it was banded with an unknown portrait. Some might have guessed that it was a Russian figure of some kind, given the related branding of other Caldwell blends, but no definitive identification was ever shared.
And so, why not switch it up? Here’s Matt Booth taking the place of the sketched portrait.
Inside the Room 101 Eastern Standard Golden Egg cigar, you’ll find a rich Dominican Habano binder and a long-filler leaf bundle that brings together Dominican criollo 98, Dominican Corojo Ligero, and Nicaraguan Habano. Outside, there’s a dashing hybrid Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper cross-bred with the monster leaf known as Brazilian mata fina (which you may have met in Drew Estate’s fantastic Liga Privada No. 9 blend).
The combo is well done – much better than you might imagine from a cigar that presents itself as whimsical. The blend quality is quite severe. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable smoke, full of complex flavor that’s bready, earthy, and finishes like spiced nuts you’d get from an NYC street vendor cart.
The goose keeps on laying those golden eggs. Booth and Caldwell keep harvesting and polishing them. And we keep on smoking them.
