Pete Johnson, the founder of Tatuaje, has an abiding love and respect for the Cuban cigar traditions. No surprise then, that he named this line after one of Cuba’s great cigar making locations: Cabaiguan. There you’ll find some Cohibas, a few Montecristos, and a nice selection of Romeo y Julietas as well. But that’s not what we’re smoking today. Today we’re smoking one of Jose “Pepin” Garcia’s tasty blends rolled up for Tatuaje in the My Father Cigars factory in Nicaragua.
For that reason, the Cabaiguan line takes Tatuaje back to its roots. After all, it was one of Pepin’s blends that originally helped the company burst onto the scene and earn the respect of Cigar Aficionado’s judges in the early 2000s. Cabinet Tainos reached #4 on Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 list in 2005, earning a 93 rating and the adoration of a new crop of fans. Cabaiguan carried on the tradition well, reaching #13 in 2008 (92 rating) and #7 in 2011 (93 rating; check out the Guapo vitola for the specific cigar that really captured the judges’ hearts).
The wrapper choices for the Tatuaje Cabaiguan are Connecticut Broadleaf, Ecuadorian Connecticut, and an Ecuadorian Sungrown version. Inside you’ll roast a Cuban-seed mixture of Nicaraguan long-fillers that offer flavors of cedar, leather, sweet cocoa powder, and mild black pepper. It’s a little love note from Cuba, by way of Nicaragua.
