Many businesses are started with visions of wealth, power, and riqueza, as they say in Spanish (“riches”). There’s often a strong current of passion to go with the desire to be rich, but businesses exist to make money, right? If they don’t turn a profit, they stop existing (unless they’re once of those public companies that can lose a hundred million each quarter and keep floating along because shareholders believe in the executives’ “long term strategy”).
For Pete Johnson, he was pulled into the world of cigars in part because he loved cigars. But along the way, he also found a few fantastic blends. Before he knew it, he was on Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 list and the riqueza began to roll in, too. That isn’t where the name of the Tatuaje La Riqueza cigar comes from, however. Instead, it’s a nod to an old pre-revolutionary Cuban cigar brand. While we’d love to offer you some of those ancient sticks, this homage from Tatuaje will have to suffice.
The good news is, this cigar is delicious.
This was Pete Johnson and Jose Pepin Garcia’s original foray into Connecticut broadleaf, with tobacco supplied by Oliva. Today, Johnson has gone on record about his love of rough, rustic CT broadleaf, but this was before the great affair had fully bloomed. Thus, the Tatuaje La Riqueza features a nice brown wrapper leaf that surrounds a blend of Nicaraguan binder and filler. After lighting, you’ll taste dark espresso, spicy cocoa, and hickory.
It’s a pretty underrated blend, in our opinion. It hasn’t sold as well as others in the Tatuaje brand portfolio. Mr. Johnson says it’s somewhat “misunderstood.” Perhaps you’ll find what others have missed in this fine cigar?
