The Tatuaje Reserva is one of the brand’s most complex cigars. The flavor notes vary quite widely (and wildly). While you’ve got your choice of wrappers - Connecticut Broadleaf or Ecuador Habano – we’d recommend you snag the broadleaf. Pete Johnson, founder of Tatuaje, is well known for his love of broadleaf, and he really knows how to find the right crop. The company even makes a cigar entirely from Connecticut Broadleaf! You’ll find tons of rustic tobacco and natural-style construction, but the flavor is something special: earthy, but also fruity, with notes of popcorn, baked goods, shades of spices, and a tendency to offer woodiness underlying everything.
It’s all in the blend, really. This isn’t a cigar that was just slapped together out of whatever leaves were laying around. The My Father cigar factory is world famous for its premium blends, one of which took Cigar Aficionado’s Cigar of the Year award in 2015 (My Father Le Bijou 1922). The Garcia family, the masterminds behind these smokes, are also entrusted with design and production for many Tatuaje cigars, including the Reserva.
Inside the wrapper, you’ll find an exquisite blend of Nicaraguan tobaccos. Each is chosen from a specific height on the tobacco stalk, and blended with a sense of the different qualities provided by low-lying leaf (volado), middle leaf (seco/viso), and high leaves (ligero). With the right mix, a cigar can go from a decent smoke to a luxury experience, and this one delivers in all its incarnations.
