Throughout the year, we shift our tastes from blend to blend, finding one that fits the season. Viaje Summerfest cigars are the perfect stogies to light up when the sun is high and the temperature is hotter than the end of a freshly lit smoke. They’re made specifically with that time in mind, but you can enjoy them whenever the heck you want. If you find yourself craving a taste of summer in the cold and darkness of a hard winter, fire it up and let the sunshine in.
As with many products from this company, Viaje Summerfest cigars are a bit of a mystery. While many cigar makers are focused on sharing all the specifics of their blends, Viaje is a short-run boutique blender that does things differently. It isn’t about wowing you with the specifics of each leaf that goes into the roll, or impressing you with how rare or special the tobacco sounds. Instead, the Viaje experience stands alone.
Knowing nothing really about the cigar, you’re invited to light up and simply enjoy the cigar on its own merits – no hype, no marketing gimmicks, no special-sounding varietals or preparation methods. It’s just you and the Viaje Summerfest cigar here.
Okay, actually, we DO have some clues this time around.
We know that these cigars were hand-rolled at the famous Tabacos Valle de Jalapa S.A. (TABSA) factory in Nicaragua. We wouldn’t be at all surprised to find out that Viaje Summerfest cigars are made with a carefully selected blend of AGANORSA’s finest Nicaraguan leaf. AGANORSA is a major grower used as a source for a number of world-class blends. These include the 95-point Foundation Wise Man (El Gueguense) and Cigar Aficionado’s #7 Cigar of 2017, the Guardian of the Farm Apollo Selección de Warped. You can also sniff out high-quality AGANORSA tobacco in many blends from Illusione, JFR, Casa Fernandez, and other skilled cigar makers.
In short, Viaje Summerfest cigars give us more than enough reason to fire them up.
Though the blend may change from one summer to the next, the sticks typically feature an open foot or “brushed” foot, which means that the filler blend is poking out, uncovered by the wrapper at the very tip of the cigar. As the company explains, this cigar is coming undressed, mimicking what we do on hot days.
Jokes and inspiration aside, what’s the real effect of an open foot? Well, it gives you a chance to experience the interior tobaccos first, and then taste the cigar as it develops once the wrapper is added to the mix. It’s an excellent way to see exactly what flavors the wrapper leaf adds to the smoke, and is a way to level up your understanding of cigars, too.
The flavors of the Viaje Summerfest cigar often are somewhere in the neighborhood of leather, cedar, and earth. Pair it up with a cold shandy and don’t forget the sunscreen if you’re going to sit out for hours of cigar time, lest you take on the look of a brisket that just spent a day in the smoker.
