Cohiba Weller cigars were made in partnership with the William Larue Weller whiskey brand, found under the massive Buffalo Trace Distillery umbrella. If we ever get to tour that place, they’ll have to send in a SWAT team to get us out. Stagg, Sazerac, Eagle Rare.. barrels upon barrels… it’s just too much. It’s like the Wonka Factory of whiskey.
What were we talking about? Oh yeah. There’s a cigar here. It’s a beaut, actually! Once you see that luscious dark wrapper, you’re going to be smitten.
Cohiba Weller cigars are led by a Honduran Ligero wrapper leaf, followed up by a Habano Medio Tiempo binder from Connecticut, and packed full of Nicaraguan tobacco from Estelí and Ometepe. Genuine CT tobacco is becoming rare enough these days, but to take Medio Tiempo from that supply is truly special. These leaves sprout above Ligero at the top of the tobacco plant stalk, but only in special cases. It happens about 5% of the time, making this a rare treasure indeed.
All of that taken together makes Cohiba Weller cigars a bona fide flavor bomb and a heck of an experience.
As Cohiba describes it: “The experience is rich and layered, imparting notes of cocoa, espresso, and leather on the palate before cascading to a luxurious finish.” Tell us, guys, when was the last time you cascaded to a luxurious finish? Never mind. Don’t answer that. But this cigar is definitely a special one.
The starting size for this line of stogies is a 5 1/2 x 50 Robusto Extra. It’s made at the General Cigar Dominicana factory where non-Cuban Cohibas have been made for ages. There’s no finishing in bourbon barrels or anything like that. The liquor was consumed in connection with the blending project, so Cohiba Weller cigars are inspired by whiskey. You’ll have to bring your own to the table to make it all come together.
These cigars are protected in glass tubes, waiting for their chance to knock your socks off. Hopefully, you’ll give them a chance before everyone catches on to how nice these smokes are.
