Line of Duty cigars are made by a unique company with a remarkable story. It’s just the dream of one guy – a retired New York City Police Detective named Tom Werther. Tom was injured on the job in middle age and needed to find a second act in life. His family had always been active in fundraising for police, firefighters, soldiers, and other public causes. And throughout his life, cigars had been there for his moments of camaraderie and private relaxation.
Line of Duty cigars allowed him to combine two passions in the best possible way.
He built public fundraising into each cigar sale. All Line of Duty cigars sales supports police, firefighters, and soldiers. At least 10% of the proceeds go to related causes. That’s the heart of the company: good, affordable stogies and a way to keep supporting people on the front lines of danger on everyone’s behalf.
Werther got into the game in a way that has to give anyone a chuckle. He wasn’t a cigar apprentice or anything like that. Instead, it was a race against the clock. There was no time to wait because federal regulations were looming that said that, beyond a specific date, any new cigars would have to undergo an extensive regulatory process before they could be listed for sale.
He had to get his first sticks done quickly, which meant finding a partner to get him on the shelf ASAP. He had to get on his phone and start dialing. Or, as was the style of the time, he had to try to get on Skype and get something going. You don’t ask, you don’t get, and Werther was willing to ask. And so, he got.
Let that be a lesson for everyone!
He started with Plasencia but ultimately found a great fit with Black Label and the Oveja Negra factory team. After some sampling and groundwork, his first Line of Duty cigar blends was born. They were named after terms familiar to anyone from an organized outfit: Grunt, CO, and everyone’s favorite, the “FNG.” (If you don’t know what it means, you might be an FNG yourself. Welcome to the crew! Try not to screw up too bad.)
These are solid smokes that don’t break the bank and help those helping us. They’re a little way for anyone to be a part of the cause, enshrined in a company motto: videmus tergus.
“We watch your back.”
