In 2001, the Onyx Reserve arrived with a splash by earning a 94 rating from a new publication called Cigar Aficionado. The publication took off like crazy, but the cigar remained relatively stable.
Now, as part of the Altadis portfolio, the brand has a chance to grow and evolve, thanks to the efforts of tobacco masters like A.J. Fernandez, who is a frequent blender of Onyx cigars. Altadis also handles mega brands like Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, and several other minor marks, so the Onyx team has fairly illustrious siblings to learn from.
At the time of this writing, Onyx cigars are led by three blends.
The first is the flagship Reserve, which has a rich three-country filler blend and a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper. The flavor profile is sweet, spicy, and still quite enjoyable.
The second is the Onyx Bold Nicaragua, which is crafted to leave behind the medium, measured approach. Using a dark San Andrés Mexican wrapper, the Onyx Bold brings in the earth and pepper for a smoke that will grab your attention.
The third blend, the Onyx Vintage Nicaragua, opts for an aged wrapper to make things more interesting. Expect sophisticated malt notes to accompany the classic profile of cedar and spice here.
The Onyx brand has moved beyond its origins to become a truly worldly cigar line with depth and variety. Using premium tobaccos and masterful blending, expect Onyx cigars to continue to impress smokers and earn more customers as Altadis’s Grupo de Maestros steers it in a wonderfully flavorful new direction.
